Progress continued at CarMax Park, the new home of the Richmond Flying Squirrels beginning in 2026, with the installation of the field's playing surface this week.
Progress continued at CarMax Park, the new home of the Richmond Flying Squirrels beginning in 2026, with the installation of the field's playing surface this week.
Carolina Green Corp., the sod vendor for the project, installed Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass. The sod was grown at Carolina Green's farms in North Carolina and South Carolina. The field is designed with drainage capacity of 15-25 inches per hour.
Representatives from the Flying Squirrels, Gilbane Building Company and Carolina Green Corp. participated in a ceremonial rolling out of the final piece of sod on Friday afternoon.
"There have been a number of moments since we broke ground last September where CarMax Park has felt more and more real," Flying Squirrels General Manager Anthony Oppermann said. "Seeing a the field installed inside the ballpark is another one of those milestone moments. It's an incredibly exciting step toward delivering Richmond a first-class venue the people in this region deserve."

The field's dimensions are set, with the center field wall sitting 400' 2" from home plate. The left field foul pole is 325' 9" and the right field foul pole is 325'. Left-center is 350' and right-center is 373' 9".
With Opening Day for the Flying Squirrels' 2026 season just over six month away, construction progress at CarMax Park remains on schedule for an April 2026 opening at.
