If Carter Howell was in Star Wars he’d have a green lightsaber. We don’t make the rules.

On Sunday, he drove a two-run homer an estimated 411 feet to left field, one of his three hits in the game.
Howell was born in Fargo, N.D., and grew up in Moorhead, Minn. Following his collegiate career at NCAA DII Augustana University, he went undrafted but signed as a free agent with the San Francisco Giants. He has been with the Flying Squirrels since the start of the 2024 season.
In his first full professional season in 2023, Howell was named the California League’s May Player of the Month as a member of the Low-A San Jose Giants. He also won the Northwest League’s Player of the Week award on Sept. 3, 2023 as a member of the High-A Eugene Emeralds. This week marks his first Eastern League Player of the Week selection.
Flying Squirrels left-hander Joe Whitman was also named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week on Monday, marking the fifth time in franchise history the team has swept the league’s weekly awards, joining Daniel Mayora and Justin Fitzgerald (July 9-16, 2012), Steven Duggar and Andrew Suarez (July 18-24, 2016), Brett Auerbach and Wil Jensen (August 1-7, 2022) and Grant McCray and John Michael Bertrand (May 20-26, 2024).
The Flying Squirrels open a six-game series on the road against the Harrisburg Senators on Tuesday night. Following the road trip, the team returns to The Diamond for a six-game series against the Erie SeaWolves from May 13-18.
