The Indianapolis Indians and the Miami Nation of Indians of Indiana established a meaningful partnership ahead of the 2023 season. As part of this collaboration, a land acknowledgment is delivered before every home game, and the team has proudly hosted a Native American Heritage Night each season since the partnership began. These celebrations have honored Miami veterans, included a plaque dedication, smudging and drum ceremonies, provided educational opportunities for fans, and more. While the organization’s name, the Indianapolis Indians, has remained the same since 1902, the team is deeply committed to strengthening its relationship with the Miami Nation and building upon this important partnership.
The Miami Nation of Indians of Indiana, one of the 100 largest tribes in the United States, holds a unique position in American history. It is the only continuously functioning, treaty-recognized tribe that is not federally recognized by the U.S. government. Tribal leaders continue their dedicated efforts at both the state and national levels to secure the recognition, respect, and status that the Miami of Indiana rightfully deserve.
