JACKSONVILLE, FLA – The Nashville Sounds opened the second half of the season on Tuesday night and got a quality start from right-hander Garrett Stallings, but it was not enough to beat the first-half champion Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The Sounds never enjoyed the lead and fell, 3-2, in 10 innings at VyStar Ballpark.
Stallings, making his fifth start of the season and fourth in a row, breezed through the first five frames on 54 pitches and one hit allowed. The only runs he allowed came in the sixth on a two-run homer by Jakob Marsee, and Stallings finished with three hits allowed, no walks and seven strikeouts in the no-decision.
Jacksonville got a quality start of its own from Adam Mazur, who tossed six scoreless innings on 75 pitches. But the Sounds rallied in the eighth inning against Christian Roa. Jared Oliva and Jorge Alfaro reached on infield singles, and Freddy Zamora walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Drew Avans worked a walk to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then Jeferson Quero grounded out to first base to score Alfaro and tie the game, 2-2. After the Sounds stranded the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, Jacksonville managed a run in the bottom half against Joel Payamps (1-1). Joe Mack’s single down the right field line plated automatic runner Andrew Pintar and earned the win for George Soriano (4-1).
The six-game series continues Wednesday at 11:05 a.m. CT. Logan Henderson (7-2, 2.44) is scheduled to start for the Sounds (0-1, 44-30), and the starter for Jacksonville (1-0, 48-28) is TBD.
