On Tuesday, September 30, in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series, 2022 Lugnuts pitcher Mason Miller came on in relief for the San Diego Padres and struck out all three Cubs he faced. It was just the prelude.
On Wednesday in Game 2, Miller struck out all five Cubs faced in 1 2/3 innings, firing a 104.5 mph fastball to break the record for fastest pitch ever recorded in the Major League postseason.

MASON MILLER JUST THREW THE FASTEST #POSTSEASON PITCH IN PITCH TRACKING HISTORY (SINCE 2008) 🤯 https://t.co/J1RdbZ2vd6 pic.twitter.com/Z4KtIoqUW4
Miller already owned the record for fastest recorded pitch in MLB All-Star Game history, a 103.6 mph fastball to Trea Turner on July 16, 2024, an appearance in which the then-rookie struck out Shohei Ohtani.
The right-hander had been drafted by the Athletics in the third round in 2021 from Gardner-Webb, making three starts for the Lugnuts to conclude the 2022 season. He was traded with JP Sears to the Padres at the 2025 deadline in exchange for a four-player package headlined by top prospect Leo De Vries.
Miller is one of two former Lugnuts in the Wild Card round, opposing 2013 Nuts lefty and current Cubs starter Matthew Boyd, who received his first nod to the All-Star Game this year.
