Lugnuts wrap Loons’ series with 4-1 loss

MIDLAND, Mich. – Cameron Decker clocked a two-run homer, drove in three, and propelled the Great Lakes Loons (25-16, 59-47) past the Lansing Lugnuts (17-25, 53-55), 4-1, on a sweltering Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond.

The Lugnuts won the first two games of the six-game series before dropping four in a row, concluding an evenly split 18-game season series with Great Lakes.

Casey Yamauchi singled in Ryan Lasko in the fifth inning for Lansing’s only run, the last of six hits allowed by Great Lakes starter Adam Serwinowski in five innings.

Four Loons relievers – Ryan Brown, Reynaldo Yean, Joseilyn Gonzalez, Cam Day – then pitched a perfect inning apiece, setting down the final 12 Lugnuts in order.

Lansing starter Steven Echavarria walked five and struck out three batters in three innings, allowing a pair of third-inning runs: an Eduardo Quintero RBI single and a Decker sacrifice fly.

Ryan Magdic pitched out of a bases-loaded spot in the fourth before serving up Decker’s fifth High-A home run in the fifth, concluding the game’s scoring. The Canadian southpaw tossed 3 2/3 innings in all before handing off to Jake Christianson for the final 1 1/3 innings.

In the loss, catcher Ben Newton went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles while left fielder Cameron Leary delivered a pair of highlight reel catches.
