Caminiti, Smith Lead Jackets Past Cannon Ballers

Pitching and Homers Define Augusta’s First Win of the Final Homestand

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The GreenJackets plated a run in six of eight innings Thursday night, while the Cannon Ballers never got a runner past second base in a 7-0 shutout win for Augusta.

In his final start of the year, there would be simply no stopping top prospect Cam Caminiti, as the lefty breezed through six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts for his second straight quality start. In pro season number one, the 19-year-old phenom ends with an ERA of 2.08 and 75 Ks in 56.1 innings.

While Caminiti carved through Kannapolis, the Augusta offense was methodical in its building of a significant lead. It all began in the bottom of the 2nd, when catcher Tanner Smith made the most of his SRP Park debut by hammering the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a solo home run against Luis Reyes. The Jackets would double the lead one inning later on an RBI single from Juan Mateo, and Reyes’ day was over after three innings with six hits allowed.

Smith was far from finished, as he led off the bottom of the fourth with a near-identical home run against Madison Jeffrey, picking up two homers in just his sixth game as a pro. Augusta did not score again in the 4th, but chased Jeffrey in the 5th after he loaded the bases, and RBIs from Smith and John Estevez pushed the total to five in five innings.

Caminiti ended his day by inducing a 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Anthony DePino, and secured his second win of the year as a result. To eliminate any further doubt in the final, though, the offense kept going, scoring a run apiece in the 6th and 7th thanks to an RBI fielder’s’ choice from Douglas Glod and an RBI triple from Dixon Williams.

Caminiti was followed by Kade Woods, throwing on his 23rd birthday, and he continued his trend of reliable relief by scattering three hits in three innings without a run. Woods grabbed his third save in six games as a pro, and his five strikeouts was the most he’s had since joining the GreenJackets. The win was the 3rd nine-inning shutout of the year for Augusta, and first involving Caminiti.

The GreenJackets have just three games remaining in the 2025 season, and will host their final Bravez BUZZ-Fest game of the year tomorrow night at 7:05. Jeremy Reyes, who has dazzled his last three outings, will take the ball for the final time, opposite impressive French rookie Matias Lacombe.
