COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Fireflies rallied late, with a four-run ninth to tie and a two-run 10th to beat the Pelicans 7-6 Wednesday night at Segra Park.
Trailling 6-5 entering the bottom of the 10th, Ramon Ramirez was placed at second and advanced to third on a ground out. After that, a wild pitch scored Ramirez to tie the game. Hyungchan Um and Henry Ramos drew walks to set the table for Yandel Ricardo. The shortstop lined a single to left to load the bases with pinch runner Angel Acosta at third as the game-winning run.
After that, the Royals’ sixth-round pick Tyriq Kemp lined a sacrifice fly to left field to score Acosta in his first plate appearance of his pro career to win the game. It was Columbia’s first walk-off win since Brennon McNair launched a homer to beat the Pelicans at Segra Park June 26.
The Pelicans pitching staff issued six walks in the last five outs of the game and Columbia took full advantage to rip off their eighth walk-off win of 2025. Jose Cerice set the tone in the ninth as the Fireflies trailed 5-1. Henry Ramos opened up the scoring in the ninth by drawing a bases loaded walk with nobody out. With one out, Brennon McNair hit a single to score Ramos and Um to make it a one-run game. Finally, Asbel Gonzalez grounded into a 6-4 fielder’s choice to bring home pinch runner Luke Nowak to tie the game.
Yenfri Sosa (W, 1-0) allowed the inherited runner to score in the 10th, but stopped the damage there to give the bats a chance. He piggy backed off Bryson Dudley, who worked two innings without allowing an earned run to keep Columbia close.
David Shields put together another strong start for Columbia. The southpaw worked four innings without allowing an earned run with five strikeouts. He now is 1-0 with 33 strikeouts in his last 29 innings to pair with a 0.64 ERA.
After that, Jordan Woods worked a scoreless fifth inning and then handed the ball to Kamden Edge. Edge allowed three to score in the seventh after a scoreless sixth inning.
The Pelicans also got a strong start from Kevin Camacho. The righty worked five frames and struck out half a dozen. He allowed one hit, which resulted in an earned run scoring against Camacho. Dawson Netz worked three scoreless innings but then couldn’t get out of the ninth. He ended up with three earned runs on his ledger. Brayden Spears (BS, 3) gave up the game tying knock after coming in in relief.
Columbia took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Hyungchan Um drew a lead-off walk and moved up to third on a Henry Ramos double. Yandel Ricardo bounced out to second to plate Um and give Columbia a 1-0 lead.
It was short-lived as the Pelicans tied the game in the top of the third. Christian Olivo singled and advanced to third on a throwing error from Um before he came around on a Kane Kepley single to tie the game.
The Fireflies continue their series with the Pelicans tomorrow night at Segra Park at 7:05 pm. RHP Kendry Chourio (0-2, 8.22 ERA) takes the ball for Columbia and Myrtle Beach counters with righty Nazier Mule (3-6, 5.65 ERA).
