Fireflies Drop Finale 7-2 to Kannapolis

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Fireflies got on the board first, but they weren’t able to hold on as they fell 7-2 to the Kannpolis Cannon Ballers at Segra Park Sunday evening.
The Fireflies got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. Columbia opened the frame with four consecutive singles. Colton Becker got the scoring started with a bases loaded single to right to plate Brennon McNair. After that, Yandel Ricardo bounced into a double play that scored Josi Novas to give Columbia a 2-0 lead.
Kannapolis countered quickly. In the top of the fourth, George Wolkow and Ronny Hernandez set the table with back-to-back singles. After that, Mikey Kane smashed a two-run triple to the right field corner to tie the game before Nathan Archer hit a two-out single to score Kane and give Kannapolis a 3-2 lead.
Wolkow smashed a two-run homer to score Caleb Bonemer in the top of the seventh to give the Cannon Ballers some insurance and a 5-2 lead.
Emmanuel Reyes (L, 1-2)) finished the night after four innings. He allowed three runs and had one strikeout before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
After that, Nick Conte worked 1.2 innings without allowing a run. Then Dash Albus allowed a pair of runs in 1.1 innings. Albus did strand a pair of inherited runners to keep the score within a run in his first inning in relief.
Augusto Mendieta closed things out with two innings in relief for Columbia. The righty allowed two runs, only one of which were earned while on the hill.
Lefty Kaleb Sophy (W, 1-2) earned his first quality start. The Kannapolis starter went six innings while allowing two runs before Blake Shepardson, Joseph Yabbour and Hale Sims each tossed a scoreless inning in relief to close out the game.
The Fireflies head to Myrtle Beach after the off day to open a six-game set at Pelicans Ballpark at 7:05 pm. The Fireflies will send RHP Yunior Marte (3-3, 2.31 ERA) to the bump and Myrtle Beach has yet to announce their starters for the series.
The Fireflies return home for a series with the Fredericksburg Nationals July 29-August 3.
