Game Summary: Noah Miller hit his first Triple-A home run and Kyle Funkhouser pitched 5.2 scoreless innings as the Oklahoma City Comets defeated the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, 2-1, Tuesday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Miller broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when he sent a fly ball out to right field for a home run to give the Comets (9-4/55-33) a 1-0 lead. Sugar Land (4-7/43-43) tied the score in the seventh inning when Quincy Hamilton lined a RBI triple down the right field line. With two outs in the eighth inning, the Comets drew three walks to load the bases before Hunter Feduccia drew the fourth straight walk of the inning to bring in a run and put Oklahoma City in front, 2-1. José Rodríguez (6-1) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen and was credited with the win while pitcher Jack Little picked up his 11th save of the season recording the final two outs of the game.
Of Note:
-The Comets won a third straight game and improved to 5-1 over the last six games with Tuesday’s win to open a six-game series against the Space Cowboys…Oklahoma City moved to a season-best 22 games above .500 with the win to 55-33 overall and is now 9-4 to start the second half of the season and is 11-4 over the last 15 games overall.
-The Comets were held to a season-low two hits and to their lowest hit total since finishing with two hits May 17, 2024 in a 5-1 road loss to Sacramento…Tuesday marked the first time since Aug. 4, 2006 that an Oklahoma City team was held to two hits and won when OKC picked up a 2-0 win against Las Vegas also at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
-Noah Miller connected on his first Triple-A home run and his second home run of the season overall…Miller has now hit safely in each of his first four Triple-A games, going 5-for-15 (.333) with a double, home run and four runs scored.
-The Comets pitching staff held the Space Cowboys to one run and five hits, led by 5.2 scoreless innings from starting pitcher Kyle Funkhouser. The run total marked the lowest by a Comets’ opponent since a 16-0 shutout win in Sacramento June 25 and Comets pitchers have now held opponents scoreless in 15 of the last 18 innings.
-Ryan Ward finished a double and walk and now has 12 hits and 14 RBI over his last eight games.
-The Comets turned two more double plays and now have 10 over their last five games.
-In his Triple-A debut, Jose Ramos was held 0-for-3, but picked up an outfield assist, catching a fly ball by Colin Barber in right field before throwing to Alex Freeland to nab Sugar Land’s Edwin Díaz at third base as part of an inning-ending double play in the fifth inning.
