Scouting the Opponent
The Carolina Mudcats entered the weekend with the second-highest batting average in the Carolina League, a .263 mark that is inline with the Fireflies at the top of the table. The Mudcats have been a walking machine though. The team is the only club with an on-base percentage above .400. Lynchburg is in second at .379. The Mudcats are also in the top third of the field in team ERA as one of four teams below the 4.00 mark.
17-year-old Jesus Made has been tearing things up for the Mudcats. The shortstop is hitting .287 with five extra-base hits in his first seven games in the circuit. Made is the Brewers’ second-best prospect and the 52nd-ranked overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Not far behind him, Eric Bitonti and Luis Pena complete a Mudcat infield with three of the Brewers top-10 prospects on the diamond.
Hickory has been dominating the mound this season. The Crawdads have the second-best ERA in the Carolina League entering Thursday. Their 3.53 ERA is neck-and-neck with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (3.48) for the best ERA in the Carolina League. The next closest team is Augusta at 3.84.
The team’s rotation features a pair of top-30 pitchers on Pipeline. Caden Scarborough has 11 strikeouts in his first two outings, spanning 6.2 innings. Kolton Curtis has yet to pitch in a game this season, but last year he dominated the Carolina League. The righty had a 2.85 ERA for the Down East Wood Ducks over 23 games in 2024.
