DAYTON, Ohio -- The Dayton Dragons, in partnership with Flying Ace Express Car Wash, will recognize WDTN-TV’s Coats for Kids as a Community All-Stars recipient during a special inning break of the Dragons game on Wednesday, September 3 against the Lansing Lugnuts at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
It all started with a simple but innovative idea in 1983 at WDTN-TV. Collect winter coats, partner with a local dry cleaner to clean them, then distribute the coats back into Dayton and the Miami Valley to those in need. Just like that, Carl’s Coats for Kids was created with Storm Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Carl Nichols, fronting the new initiative.
That first year, over 20,000 coats were collected. And every year since, WDTN-TV has been collecting coats, gloves, winter hats, and scarves in those familiar barrels. Since its inception, over 600,000 coats and winter accessories have been collected by generations of folks from across the Miami Valley.
WDTN-TV’s Coats for Kids celebrates its 42nd year, and the need is bigger than ever. The program is made possible through the help of tremendous longstanding partners playing key roles. Rush Transportation and Logistics have been picking up donation barrels from Coats for Kids for many years. Donated coats from each campaign are then cleaned through a partnership with Cintas. Both partners donate these services at no charge, allowing the Coats for Kids program to focus on getting coats to those in need.
For providing winter wear to those in need across the Miami Valley, WDTN-TV’s Coats for Kids is a Dragons Community All-Star. To learn more about their mission, find a donation site, or donate to this year’s coat drive, visit wdtn.com/coats-for-kids.
