March 31, 2016: At Reading, the Phillies hammer a team of their top prospects, 19-4, in the first “Phillies Futures Game”. The 7-inning exhibition draws an announced crowd of 9,320. With a strong wind blowing out to center field the game features home runs by 11 different players, 8 of them being big Phils (Ryan Howard, Darin Ruf and Dylan Cozens, the top three single-season home run hitters in Reading franchise history, all homer). Philadelphia’s Tyler Goeddel, Maikel Franco and Cedric Hunter go back-to-back-to-back in the 5th inning against Mark Appel. Ryan Howard delights the crowd with a pinch-hit homer in the 7th and the crowd coaxes Pete Mackanin to give Carlos Ruiz a pinch-hit appearance (sac fly) by chanting “we want Chooch” later that inning.
April 1, 2013: At Reading, the club unveils its newest mascots, a pair of live ostriches that reside in a pen on the hill beyond the center field fence. The team would later hold a name-the-ostriches contest and despite finishing 4th out of 5 pair choices (Phyllis & Phannie easily tallied the most votes), Ruth and Judy were selected as the winners. After just two seasons, the team would decide that taking care of the birds was too onerous and opted not to bring them back.
April 1, 2025: At Reading, the Fightin Phils welcome High-A Jersey Shore in a preseason exhibition game, which the R-Phils win 6-3. The BlueClaws became the first visiting team to occupy the new visitor clubhouse of the Redner’s Event Center.
April 2, 2025: At Reading, the Fightin Phils unveil the new and improved Redner’s Market Beer & Wine Café Big Straw Slushies stand in the Diamond Credit Union Plaza.
April 3, 2018: At Reading, the annual 222 Showcase exhibition game between Reading and Lehigh Valley is rained out. It is the second cancellation in the game’s history, with the first coming at Lehigh Valley in 2015.
April 3, 2025: At Reading, the brand new Alarm Tech Team Store is announced, featuring a new partnership with Alarm Tech for naming rights and a store three-times the size of the old store. The new store’s expansion occupies the footprint of the old home clubhouse.

April 4, 1996: At Reading, Manny Amador’s pinch-hit homer in the 8th inning gives the Phils a 9-7 Opening night win over Portland.
April 4, 2003: At Reading, Seung-Hak Lee throws six shutout innings in the Phillies’ 5-0 win over Altoona. Dating back to the previous season, Lee threw 31 straight innings without allowing an earned run. (19.0 IP with Clearwater in ’02 and 6.0 IP with Reading in ’02). He would extend his streak to 33 innings before surrendering a run in the third inning at Altoona his next time out.
April 4, 2019: At Portland, four pitchers combined to give the Fightin Phils a 4-0 win over the Sea Dogs on Opening Day. Ramon Rosso picks up the win with five-scoreless innings and four strikeouts. Adam Haseley and Micky Moniak each double, while Luke Williams picks up two hits and scores a pair of runs.
April 4, 2023: Reading unveils the naming sponsor of its new event center. It will be called the Redner’s Event Center. The new event center will host new clubhouses, weightrooms and more starting in 2024. Additionally, fans can watch games from the event center and hosts gathers in the 550-person ballroom. In 2023, the new construction will feature a new home run wall, lights and much more.
April 4, 2023: Reading takes a trip to Jersey Shore to scrimmage the BlueClaws, the High-A affiliate of the Phillies. The Fightins defeated the BlueClaws 3-2 behind strong pitching and four excellent innings from David Parkinson, who did not pitch in all of 2022.
April 4, 2025: At Reading, Phillies No. 2 Prospect Aidan Miller hits his first Double-A home run as Reading falls to Portland 14-6 on Opening Night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
April 5, 1996: At Reading, Portland scores seven runs in the 10th to beat the R-Phils, 13-7.
April 5, 2004: Paul “Cooter” Jones is crowned the second King of Baseballtown at a banquet at the Sheraton Reading. Also that night, Ryan Howard makes his first public appearance in Baseballtown as part of Meet the Players Night.
April 5, 2007: At Reading on a cold and windy opening night, Mike Costanzo drives a home run over the left-center field wall in his first Double-A at-bat to spark the Phils to a 4-1 win over Harrisburg. Wyomissing native Taylor Swift, on the rise as a country music star, performs the national anthem.
April 5, 2012: At Reading, the Phillies give Dusty Wathan two wins in his Double-A managerial debut as they sweep Portland, 4-2 and 7-4 in an Opening Night double-header. In Game 1, Sebastian Valle homers in his first R-Phils at-bat and Leandro Castro’s 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th wins it.
April 5, 2013: At New Hampshire, 21-year old Jesse Biddle wins his Fightin Phils debut as Reading tops the Fisher Cats, 6-1. Biddle allows one earned run on two hits in 6.0 innings while striking out six and walking one.
April 5, 2018: At Reading, on a cold Opening Night (41 degrees at game time), the Fightin Phils fall to Erie, 7-1. Cornelius Randolph goes 2-for-4 with a double and scores Reading’s only run in his Double-A debut while Damek Tomscha reaches base in all 4 of his plate appearances (1-for-1, 3 walks). A propane heater in the Reading dugout catches fire in the 7th inning, causing a brief delay before being extinguished by groundskeeper Dan Douglas.
April 5, 2019: At Portland, the Fightin Phils score two runs in the 10th to move to 2-0 with an extra-inning victory over the Sea Dogs. Adonis Medina started and allowed one-earned run over five innings and Kyle Dohy earned the win with five strikeouts over the game’s final three innings. Mickey Moniak picked up two hits, two runs, a double, home run and two RBI, while Josh Stephen had two hits and Cornelius Randolph drove in a pair of runs.
April 5, 2024: At Bowie, the Fightin Phils earn their first Opening Day victory since 2019 in a 5-2 win over the Baysox. Tied at two in the ninth, Reading added three runs to put the game away. Gabriel Rincones Jr. hit his first Double-A homer, a moonshot that went 452 feet to right field. Carlos De La Cruz also added two hits for the Fightin Phils.
April 6, 2001: At Reading, Carlos Silva wins his Reading debut by whitewashing Akron for five innings in a 5-2 win. Silva allows three hits and strikes out eight Aeros.
April 6, 2019: At Portland, the Fightin Phils improve to 3-0 as they rack up 15 hits in a lopsided 8-1 win over the Sea Dogs. David Parkinson earned the win as he struck out 10 over five one-run and one-hit innings. Jose Antequere led Reading with four hits and two runs. Mickey Moniak had two hits and three RBI in the victory.
April 6, 2023: The Reading Fightin Phils partnered with Reading School as FirstEnergy Stadium will serve as the host of Red Knights’ home games for the next 20 years. A ceremony was held at the ballpark recognizing the partnership and the Reading baseball team as well.
April 6, 2024: At Bowie, the Fightin Phils fall to the Baysox 19-1 in a one-sided contest. The lone bright spot for Reading came on a Gabriel Rincones Jr. home run in the first, marking the second-straight night Rincones Jr. hit a home run.
April 6, 2025: At Reading, Griff McGarry strikes out eight batters over four-perfect innings in his first start since Aug. 26, 2023. McGarry would be named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week the following day.
April 7, 1994: At Reading, the Portland Sea Dogs made their debut in the Eastern League a memorable one by beating the Phillies, 2-1 in 14 innings. Charles Johnson’s solo home run in the 14th provided the winning margin.
April 7, 2003: At Reading, a spring snowfall cancels the Phillies game against Bowie as more than two inches blanket the FirstEnergy Stadium field. The snow and ensuing wet conditions end up postponing the entire three game series.
April 7, 2008: At Bowie, Javon Moran’s 2-run triple breaks a 3-3 tie in the 10th inning as the R-Phils win 6-3 and hand the Baysox their fifth straight loss to start the season.
April 7, 2012: At Reading, the R-Phils complete a 4-game season-opening sweep of Portland with a 4-1 victory. David Buchanan goes 7.0 strong innings to win his Double-A debut, striking out 9 while giving up just two hits and one walk.
April 7, 2023: Reading and Richmond’s 2023 season opener was postponed due to rain in the Richmond area. The two teams would open their seasons with a doubleheader the following day.
April 8, 2001: At Reading, Brett Myers wins his first game as a Reading Phillie and Andy Dominique and Bobby Van Iten each drive in five to lift Reading over Akron, 14-3. Dominique goes 4-for-4 with two homers and four runs scored while Van Iten is 2-for-4 with a long ball. A seven-run 8th puts the game out of reach.
April 8, 2004: At Akron, the Phillies drop their season opener, 3-2, to the Aeros in 16 innings. Miguel Quintana goes 4-for-8 in his R-Phils debut.
April 8, 2005: At Reading, in the completion of game that was suspended from the night before, Reading makes a winner out of Steve Swisher in his Baseballtown managerial debut, 5-4, over Altoona. Chris Roberson (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI) and Michael Bourn (1-for-3, RBI) each play in their first Double-A games. Curve pitcher Mike Connolly gives up a run and takes the loss despite not pitching that day.
April 8, 2011: At Portland, the R-Phils beat Portland, 7-5, to give Mark Parent his first win as Reading’s manager. Cody Overbeck hits a 3-run homer and Austin Hyatt goes 5.0 innings (4 H, ER, 3 BB, 6 K) for the win
April 8, 2012: At Reading, the Phillies win their 5th straight game to start the season, beating New Hampshire, 5-2. Tyson Gillies leads the charge by going 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs.
April 8, 2016: At Reading, Jorge Alfaro goes 4-for-5 with a double, 2 RBIs and run scored in the Fightin Phils’ 8-3 win over Portland. Angelo Mora chips in 3 extra base hits, going 3-for-4 with a homer, 2 doubles, a walk, 3 runs and 2 RBIs.
April 8, 2019: At New Hampshire, the Fightin Phils combine to shutout the Fisher Cats in a 2-0 victory. Ali Castrillo had two hits and Austin Listi scored both runs in the win.
April 8, 2023: At Richmond, Reading is swept in a doubleheader to open its season. Wendell Rijo collected a couple of hits, an RBI and run scored over the two games, but the rest of the R-Phils offense is held silent.
April 8, 2025: At Somerset, the Fightin Phils utilize a four-run ninth inning to come from behind and beat Somerset 5-4 for Reading’s first win of the season. A throwing error on what should have been the game-ending double play tied the game then Trent Farquhar singled to give Reading the lead for good.
April 9-10, 1999: At Reading, Jimmy Rollins and Pat Burrell make their Reading Phillies debut and the Altoona Curve makes its franchise debut on an Opening Night in which bad weather forces the game to be suspended in the 2nd inning. The Phils win the game, which is completed the next day, 6-2, as Rollins goes 1-for-3 with an RBI while Burrell is 2-for-4.
April 9, 2006: At Bowie, Jim Rushford’s grand slam in the 7th inning blows the game open as the Phils beat the Baysox, 8-3. It is P.J. Forbes’ first victory as Reading manager. Tim McClaskey picks up the win by scattering three runs and eight hits in 7.0 innings.
April 9, 2011: At Portland, Chris Frey goes 4-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs as the R-Phils pound the Sea Dogs, 13-5. Matt Rizzotti (3 doubles, 3 runs) and Cody Overbeck (double, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) contribute three hits apiece to Reading’s 17-hit attack.
April 9, 2015: At Portland, the Fightin Phils’ season opener with the Sea Dogs is snowed out. The next night’s game would also be postponed before the teams finally get to play a doubleheader on April 11.
April 9, 2018: At Reading, a light snow falls for the entire game (39 degrees at game time) as the Fightin Phils rally to beat winless Portland, 6-5. Franklyn Kilome strikes out 8 over 4.0 innings in his season debut but is lifted early due to a high pitch count. Seranthony Dominguez gets the win (due to scorekeeper’s discretion) by pitching 2.0 perfect innings, striking out 3, while Luke Leftwich gets his first save with a 1-2-3 9th inning.
April 9, 2023: At Richmond, Reading loses 7-3 to be swept by the Flying Squirrels in the season-opening series. It was Reading’s first 0-3 start since 2021 and third in the previous five years.
April 9, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils come from behind and beat Portland 9-8. Carson Taylor homers twice, including the game winner in the bottom of the seventh. Jose Rodriguez hits his first homer as a member of the Phillies organization and Gabriel Rincones Jr. works four walks. Max Lazar earns his second save with Reading on the young season.
April 9, 2025: At Somerset, the Fightin Phils ride dominant bullpen pitching to a 3-1 win over the Patriots. The relief arms combined to go: 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 SO. Eiberson Castellano, making his season-debut in relief, went three-perfect innings and struck out five batters. Robert Moore had two hits and two RBI and Paul McIntosh had a RBI for the fourth-straight game in the win.
April 10, 1992: At Reading, Tyler Green wins his AA debut 8-1 vs. Albany. He pitches 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 8 hits and striking out 8.
April 10, 1994: At Reading, Jon Zuber drives in six runs with a single, triple, and home run in the Phils’ 13-4 win over Portland.
April 10, 1995: At Reading, David Doster and Jason Moler each hit solo homers in the bottom of the 10th to beat Norwich, 7-6. The Phils tied the game in the 8th with four runs.
April 10, 1998: At Reading, Trenton’s David Gibraltar spoils Opening Day at Municipal Stadium with a grand slam in the 10th inning as the Thunder wins it, 6-2.
April 10, 2000: At Bowie, Reading puts up a four spot in the 9th inning to beat the Baysox, 10-6. Gary Burnham drives in five of the Reading runs.
April 10, 2004: At Akron, Ryan Howard hits his first home run as a Reading Phillie. It’s a three-run blast in the third inning of a 5-4 loss.
April 10, 2009: At Reading, the R-Phils rally for two runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to nip Harrisburg, 2-1, and give Steve Roadcap his first victory as Reading’s manager. Michael Taylor and Brian Stavisky hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Phils the lead.
April 10, 2016: At Reading, the Fightin Phils pull out a 5-4 win in 13 innings against Portland. Roman Quinn goes just 1-for-6, but his lone hit is the game-winning RBI single. Angelo Mora (4-for-6, 3B, 2 R, RBI) leads off the 13th with a triple and scores the winning run. Dylan Cozens is 2-for-5 with a 2-run homer, the first of a record-breaking 40 he would hit that season.
April 10, 2018: At Reading, Portland outlasts the Fightin Phils, 7-5, in the club’s first extra-inning game under the new “runner starts at second base” rule. The Sea Dogs plate 3 runs in the 13th without putting the ball in play as Garrett Cleavinger walks 4, hits a batter and strikes out 3. The rule, designed to end extra-inning games more quickly, does little to hasten the game’s conclusion as the contest lasts 4:15. The 10th inning alone (in which both clubs score a run), takes more than 30 minutes to complete.
April 10, 2019: At New Hampshire, the Fisher Cats score three-unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to come from behind for a 5-4 win. Mickey Moniak’s strong start to the season continued with two hits, a run, home run and two RBI in the defeat.
April 10, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils beat Portland 5-1 to improve to 3-2 on the season. It marked the first time since the end of the 2019 season that Reading was over .500. Jose Rodriguez had three hits and Carson Taylor earned a pair of base knocks. Lachlan Wells started and the Australian Native went five innings and earned his first affiliated win since 2019, with the Twins organization.
April 11, 1919: Reading is granted a franchise in the International League for $5,000 and replaces the Syracuse team.
April 11, 1995: At Reading, the Phils plate seven runs in the 6th to beat Norwich, 9-8 as Adan Milan hits two doubles and a homer.
April 11, 2004: At Akron, pitcher Gavin Floyd makes his Reading Phillies debut a memorable one by tossing five no-hit innings to help the R-Phils beat the Aeros, 6-1. Floyd strikes out six and walks one.
April 11, 2010: At Reading, Tagg Bozied’s 3-run homer with two outs in the 7th turns a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead as the R-Phils rally by Portland, 6-4. Bozied, who also had a 2-run double, finishes 2-for-2 with 5 RBIs.
April 11, 2011: At New Hampshire, the R-Phils wrap out 18 hits in a 13-1 pounding of the Fisher Cats. Cody Overbeck is 5-for-5 with a 3-run homer and two runs scored and Matt Rizzotti is 3-for-4 with a homer, 2 RBI and 4 runs scored. Derrick Mitchell adds a 2nd inning grand slam.
April 11, 2017: At New Hampshire, Reading bangs out 17 hits, 4 of them by Harold Martinez, in a 10-5 win over the Fisher Cats. Angelo Mora, Scott Kingery and Andrew Pullin all homer for the Fightin Phils, whose first 7 batters all have at least one RBI and one run scored.
April 11, 2018: At Reading, Deivi Grullon blasts a pair of home runs and drives in 4 as the Fightin Phils whip Portland, 12-4, in a business person’s special. With the wind blowing out, there are a total of 8 homers hit between the teams, with the Sea Dogs’ Esteban Quiroz also leaving the yard twice. Damek Tomscha (HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R) and Kyle Martin (HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R) each collect 3 of Reading’s 16 hits as every Fightin Phils starter hits safely
April 11, 2023: At Reading, the R-Phils open up their 2023 home schedule against the Hartford Yard Goats. It is the first game played with a new home run wall, lights and much more, amongst ongoing construction during the season. The R-Phils fell to Hartford 8-6 in front of 6,417 fans. Reading also debuted its new “Reading Keystone” jerseys it will wear in 2023 to celebrate the 275th Anniversary of Reading.
April 12, 2001: At Altoona, Adam Walker extends his season-opening shutout string to 12 innings as he combines with Blas Cedeno to beat the Curve, 5-1. In six innings, Walker fans six and surrenders two hits and a walk.
April 12, 2008: At Reading, Fabio Castro pitches 7.0 innings of scoreless one-hit ball and John Suomi hits a 3-run homer as the Phils hold off Altoona, 5-2. Castro strikes out nine Curve batters and walks three.
April 12, 2011: At New Hampshire, Tim Kennelly draws a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the top of the 11th inning to drive in Cody Overbeck with the winning run as the R-Phils beat the Fisher Cats, 3-2. Justin DeFratus goes 3.0 perfect innings, striking out six for the win.
April 12, 2013: At Reading, the rebranded Fightin Phils make their home debut with a 3-1 win over Erie. In a rare Friday night opener, the club draws 8,621 fans curious to see the team’s new uniforms in action. Seth Rosin tosses 6.0 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 5 for the victory and Sebastian Valle hits a solo homer.
April 12, 2023: At Reading, the R-Phils offense explodes for 15 hits, but it’s not enough as the Hartford Yard Goats win 8-7. Carlos De La Cruz went 3-5, including a long home run to left and a then-game-tying single in the bottom of the 8th.
April 13, 2001: At Akron, Reading loses a heartbreaker, 1-0, in 12 innings when Jon Hamilton singles home Brian Benefield with the decisive tally. Phillies starter Brett Myers pitches seven brilliant innings, giving up four hits and no walks while striking out 11.
April 13, 2006: At Reading, Carlos Leon’s 2-out RBI single up the middle scores Jim Rushford with the game’s only run as the Phillies win their 40th home opener, 1-0, over Altoona. Gio Gonzalez pitches 7.0 innings of 5-hit, 6 strikeout ball and Dan Giese picks up the win with two scoreless frames.
April 13, 2016: At Reading, Christian Marrero’s pinch-hit 3-run homer in the 6th leads the Fightin Phils to a 6-4 win over Richmond. J.P. Crawford hits his first HR of the season and Ben Lively strikes out 9 in 5.0 IP (6 H, BB, 2 ER) but does not get a decision.
April 13, 2019: At Reading, a day after the home opener was rained out, the Fightin Phils defeat Richmond 5-1 in the rescheduled home lid lifter. Ramon Rosse did not allow a run over 5.1 innings and struck out seven to improve to 2-0. Luke Williams had two double and a RBI, while Darick Hall added a double and drove in two runs.
April 13, 2023: At Reading, new R-Phils Manager Al Pedrique picked up his first win in a Fightin Phils uniform. It was an all-around effort in a 4-2 win, one in which the offense had timely hits and bullpen threw five innings, allowing just one run.
April 13, 2025: At Somerset, the Fightin Phils come-from-behind in the ninth inning for the second tie in the six-game series. Down by one in the ninth, Cade Fergus homered to tie the game, then later in the frame, Keaton Anthony hit a two-run home run to give Reading the lead for good. It was already the R-Phils’ second ninth-inning comeback win that season, surpassing their total of one all of 2024.
April 14, 1993: At London, the R-Phils manage to beat the Tigers, 1-0, even though they collect just one hit. Jeff Jackson drives in the lone run with a sac fly in the 8th. Ronnie Allen goes 7 innings for the win.

April 14, 2023: At Reading, the R-Phils lose a sloppy game 6-4 to Hartford. The R-Phils committed four errors on the night, but outhit the Yard Goats 11-5. Johan Rojas led the way with three hits for the Fightin Phils.
April 14, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils fall 9-5 to Portland in a sloppy loss. The Fightin Phils commit four errors on the exact one-year anniversary of the last time they had four errors in a game. Phillies No. 10 Prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr. hit his third home run of the season, and opposite field shot to left, in the loss.
April 15, 1999: At Harrisburg, Reggie Taylor goes 3-for-5 with a triple, home run and 5 RBI in a 5-3 Phils win over the Senators.
April 15, 2000: At Altoona, Rusty McNamara’s 3-run blast in the 10th inning breaks a scoreless tie and lifts Reading to a 3-0 win over the Curve.
April 15, 2003: At Reading, Brian Hitchcox hits a 2-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to rally the R-Phils past Akron, 5-4. Reading trailed 4-0 in the 6th and 4-1 going into the bottom of the 8th.
April 15, 2025: At Reading, the Fightin Phils roll Binghamton 12-2, thanks to four home runs and a six-run bottom of the fourth inning. Robert Moore had a career game, hitting two home runs, driving in five RBI, and scoring three runs. Elio Prado homered and Aidan Miller added his second home run of the season. Eiberson Castellano got the win with three-scoreless innings in relief.
April 16, 2000: At Altoona. Eric Valent leads an 18-hit attack with a single, homer and 4 RBI in the Phils’ 14-2 rout of Altoona.
April 16, 2004: At Reading, Gavin Floyd makes his first start at FirstEnergy Stadium, going 5.2 shutout innings against Akron. Though he extends his shutout streak to 10.2 innings, Floyd receives a no-decision in the 3-2 Phillies’ win.

April 16, 2018: At Harrisburg, Ranger Suarez picks up his first Double-A victory as the Fightin Phils blank the Senators, 6-0. Suarez allows 6 hits and strikes out 10 over 8.0 innings and does not issue a walk. Zach Coppola goes 3-for-5 with 2 runs and a stolen base while Kyle Martin connects for a grand slam in the 5th inning.
April 16, 2019: At Reading, the Fightin Phils pick up 10 hits in a 5-2 win over Portland. Bailey Falter earned the win, allowing one-earned run over six-strong inning. Luke Williams had two hits and two runs, Adam Haselay had two hits, two doubles and a RBI and Ali Castrillo added three hits, two doubles, a run and RBI in the victory.
April 16, 2024: At Binghamton, the Fightin Phils strike out 18 times as they fall to the Rumble Ponies 3-2. The 18 punchouts mark a franchise record for Binghamton. Kendall Simmons had two hits and Jose Rodrguez added two stolen bases as Reading swiped four bags on the night in the loss.
April 16, 2025: At Reading, the Fightin Phils win their third-straight win, 7-4, over Binghamton. Jean Cabrera allows just one-earned run and strikes out seven over five innings in his first win of the season. Aidan Miller had three hits and two runs and Robert Moore stayed hot with a double and two RBI.
April 17, 1993: At Reading, Ron Lockett hits 2 homers and drives in 5 to lead the Phils past Binghamton, 12-5.
April 17, 1995: At Norwich, the Navigators rally for four in the bottom of the 9th to win their first home opener, 5-4, in front of 6,628 at Dodd Stadium.
April 17, 2004: At Reading, Ryan Howard hits his first home run at FirstEnergy Stadium, a two-run shot in the 1st inning off Akron’s Kyle Evans. The Phils fall to the Aeros, 7-4.
April 17, 2006: At Reading, Bryan Hansen’s RBI double ties the game in the 9th and Joey Hammond’s sacrifice fly in the 10th scores Michael Bourn with the game-winner as the Phils beat Connecticut, 4-3. Twin Valley grad Nick Mattioni gets his first win as a Reading Phillie by tossing a perfect 10th.
April 17, 2008: At Norwich, Fabio Castro and two relievers combine to shutout Connecticut on three hits as Reading sneaks by the Defenders, 1-0. Greg Golson doubles and later scores the lone run in the 6th inning on a costly two-out throwing error by pitcher Joey Martinez.
April 17, 2011: At Reading, Michael Spidale singles home Derrick Mitchell with the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning to give Reading a 5-4 win over Akron in game two of a double-header sweep.
April 17, 2012: At Richmond, the R-Phils rock the Flying Squirrels for 22 hits in a 19-6 pounding at the Diamond. Ten of Reading’s runs come in the 6th inning. Among the hitting stars are Cesar Hernandez (5-for-6, 5 runs, RBI), Leandro Castro (3-for-5, 2 doubles, 6 RBI, run) and Darin Ruf (5-for-5, HR, 2B, 4 R, 2 RBI). Ruf’s homer would be the first of his record-breaking 38 that season for the R-Phils.
April 17, 2015: At Reading, Aaron Nola rebounds from losing the season opener in Portland to pick up the win in his first home start of the season. He goes 6.0 shutout innings, surrendering just 4 hits and a walk while striking out 5 in a 7-1 win over Richmond. Brock Stassi goes 2-for-4 with 3 RBI for Reading. Roman Quinn is 2-for-4 with 3 stolen bases and 2 runs, giving him at least one run scored in his first 7 games as a Fightin Phil.
April 17, 2016: At Harrisburg, the Fightin Phils pound out 16 hits in a 14-2 drubbing of the Senators. Harold Martinez goes 3-for-5 and scores 4 times; KC Serna is 4-for-6 with a double, 4 RBIs and a run; and Jorge Alfaro goes 3-for-4 with a triple, 4 RBIs and a run. Alfaro extends his hit streak to 8 to start the season and tallies his 7th straight multi-hit game.
April 17, 2019: At Reading, the Fightin Phils allow four runs in the top of the 10th inning to fall 11-7 to Portland in extra-innings. Cornelius Randolph and Darick Hall both homered and drove in three runs in the loss.

April 18, 2006: At Reading, Daniel Haigwood (6.0 IP, 6 K, 3 H, 5 BB) and three relievers combine on a 6-hit shutout of Connecticut as Reading wins, 3-0. Adam Shafer earns the save.
April 18, 2015: At Reading, Brock Stassi drives in Gabriel Lino with an RBI single in the 10th inning, giving the Fightin Phils a 6-5 win over Richmond. Stassi, who did not start the game, had already delivered a game-tying 2-run single in the 8th in his first at-bat. It is his 4th game with 3 RBI or more in the season’s first 8 contests and would set the stage for his leading the league in runs batted in at season’s end.
April 18, 2023: At Portland, the R-Phils ride dominating pitching to a 3-1 win. Ethan Lindow pitched five shutout innings and Madison Stokes had the go-ahead RBI double. Pedro Martinez tacked on two-more runs with a long home run in the eighth inning.
April 18, 2024: At Binghamton, the Fightin Phils split a doubleheader losing 4-3 in game one and winning 7-4 in game two. They were down 4-1 in the seventh in game two and scored six-unanswered runs for the win. Both games of the doubleheader went into extra innings, marking the first time that happened since June 10, 2023 at home against Binghamton.
April 18, 2025: At Reading, Griff McGarry completes a “hidden no-hitter” to start the season, as he does not allow a hit over his first 9.0 IP of the season in two-plus starts. McGarry took the loss, as he allowed two-unearned runs.
April 19, 1918: Baseballtown legend George “Whitey” Kurowski is born in Reading. Kurowski would have a nine-year Major League career as a third baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals,
posting a lifetime .286 batting average and driving in over 100 runs twice. He helped the Cards win four National League pennants and three World Series rings from 1942-46.
April 19, 1963: At Springfield, 19-yead old Bob Bishop no-hits the Reading Red Sox while striking out 16 on Opening Day as the Giants win, 2-0.

April 19, 2011: At Reading, Cody Overbeck goes 3-for-4 with his 6th home run in the first 13 games as the Phillies beat Erie, 8-6. He also hits a double and drives in four, increasing his league-leading RBI total to 17.
April 19, 2015: At Reading, Zach Eflin holds Richmond scoreless over 8.0 innings to improve to 2-0 and extend his streak to 14 innings without allowing a run. He allows just 3 hits and a walk while striking out 5 in the 6-0 victory. Harold Martinez goes 3-for-3 with his first home run and drives in 3 for Reading.
April 19, 2023: At Portland, the R-Phils battle back from a 3-0 deficit when Wendell Rijo hits a game-tying single in the ninth inning. But the Sea Dogs would win the game 4-3 in walk-off fashion on a fielder’s choice.
April 19, 2024: At Binghamton, the Fightin Phils turn in their most-complete game of the season to date, winning 8-2 over the Rumble Ponies. The pitchers strike out a season-high 16, including nine from Robinson Pina over five innings. Carson Taylor had three hits and Casey Martin added his first home run of the season. Max Lazar tossed two-shutout innings to end the game and keep his shutout streak alive to start the season.
April 19, 2025: At Reading, the Fightin Phils fall 6-1 to Binghamton, but their lone run comes in the bottom of the seventh when Cade Fergus tripled and then scored due to a throwing error on the Rumble Ponies, resulting in a little-league home run. It was also the first Reading triple of the season in the Fightin Phils 14th game of the year.
April 20, 1907: The first game is played at Lauer’s Park, with Reading downing Camden, 9-4, in the season opener for the outlaw Atlantic League.
April 20, 1921: At Lauer’s Park in Reading, the Aces defeat Rochester, 6-5, in front of a record-breaking crowd of 10,000 on Opening Day.
April 20, 1922: At Lauer’s Park in Reading, the Aces open the International League season in front of 8,000 fans, defeating Toronto, 4-1, in Chief Bender’s first game as manager. Myrl Brown goes the distance on a four-hitter, striking out seven and allowing only one unearned run.
April 20, 1992: At Reading, Mike Lieberthal hits his first Double-A HR in a 10-6 win over London.
April 20, 1996: At Reading, former R-Phil Rick Holifield exacts some revenge on Reading by going 4-for-6 with 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 SB, 2B & HR in Trenton’s 14-4 win. The Thunder hit six home runs in the game.
April 20, 1998: At Harrisburg, Steve Carver goes 5-for-5 with two doubles, two homers and a Reading Phillie record eight RBI in an 11-10 loss. The Senators win the game with three runs in the bottom on the 9th.
April 20, 1999: At Reading, a six-run 8th highlights a 13-4 win over Akron. Tyrone Horne goes 4-
for-4 with four runs and Kirk Pierce knocks in five.
April 20, 2003: At Erie, Reading hits home runs in each of the first four innings on the way to an 11-6 triumph over the SeaWolves. Brian Hitchcox, Jeff Inglin, Edgar Cruz and Jorge Padilla were the long ball hitters. Inglin went 3-for-5 with 2 HR, 2 R and 4 RBI.
April 20, 2006: At New Britain, a walk, a hit batter and two errors allow the Phils to rally for three runs in the top of the 9th and overtake the Rock Cats, 8-7. Reading had rallied from a 4-1 deficit with four in the 8th thanks to four hits and a pair of errors only to fall behind again in the bottom of the inning. Six of the Phils’ eight runs are unearned.
April 20, 2012: At Reading, the R-Phils rally from a 3-0 deficit after seven innings to beat Akron, 4-3 in 10. Troy Hanzawa’s 2-out, 2-run single in the 9th ties it and Steve Susdorf doubles home Darin Ruf with one out in the 10th to give Reading its 11th win in 15 games.
April 20, 2015: At Reading, Roman Quinn and Aaron Altherr lead the Fightin Phils to their 5th straight win, a 9-4 triumph over Akron. Quinn goes 3-for-3 with a double, walk, 3 runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Altherr is 2-for-4 with his first homer of the season and 4 RBI
April 21, 1963: At Springfield, after being shutout in their first two games, the Reading Red Sox defeat the Giants, 5-3, in 17 innings to break into the win column. Bob Lawrence’s two-run triple provides the winning runs and Steve Chamos tosses seven shutout innings for the victory. Springfield pitchers had held the Sox without an earned run for 34 straight innings before Lawrence’s key hit.
April 21, 1995: At Reading, Chad McConnell singles home the game-winner in the 9th to beat Trenton, 3-2. It was Reading’s 8th win in 9 one-run games.
April 21, 1999: At Reading, Pat Burrell hits his first Double-A HR and Larry Huff scores four times
in a 9-5 win over Akron . Burrell would go on to hit a total of 28 home runs during the season.
April 21, 2005: At Reading, the Phillies are shut out for a third consecutive game, dropping a 1-0 decision to Norwich. David Aardsma and two relievers combine to one-hit Reading, whose only hit is an infield single by pitcher Chris Rojas. Rojas takes the loss despite giving up just four hits and one run over eight innings. Reading would end its streak of 30 straight scoreless innings the next night.
April 21, 2007: At Reading, Jesus Merchan goes 4-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI as the R-Phils blast Akron, 13-7. Greg Jacobs, Brian Burgamy and Juan Tejeda also homer in the 17-hit attack and each R-Phils starter collects at least one hit.
April 21, 2017: At Richmond, Carlos Tocci goes 3-for-5 with a triple and 4 RBIs as the Fightin Phils top the Flying Squirrels, 6-2. Andrew Pullin also collects 3 hits and Scott Kingery scores twice for Reading.
April 21, 2023: At Portland, the R-Phils offense rolls to a 10-1 win over the Sea Dogs. Oliver Dunn and Cam Cannon both have three hits, while Dunn reached base five times in the victory. Phillies No. 2 prospect Mick Abel throws 4.2 strong innings, then Taylor Lehman and Andrew Baker combine with Abel to strike out Portland 11 times and allow just five hits and one run.
April 21, 2024: At Binghamton, the Fightin Phils beat the Rumble Ponies 5-4 behind a strong day from Robert Moore. The Phillies No. 26 Prospect has two hits a run scored, and leads the way with three RBI.
April 22, 1922: At Lauer’s Park in Reading, Aces’ right fielder Tom Miller drops a routine fly ball in the 9th inning that leads to the deciding run in a 7-6 loss to Toronto. Miller is awarded a five dollar gold piece by the Mayes Advertising Company, which offered the prize to the first Reading player of the season who muffed a fly ball.
April 22, 1953 – At Williamsport, the Reading Indians score seven runs in the top of the 12th to win a wild 13-8 affair against the Athletics on Opening Day. Rudy Regalado’s three-run homer keys the winning rally. Regalado winds up 3-for-6 with five RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base
April 22, 1967: At Reading, the Reading Phillies make their debut in Baseballtown, beating York, 9-3, before 6,046 fans. Jeff Harrell goes the distance on a 6-hitter for the win and helps his own cause with a three-run single. All three runs Harrell surrenders are unearned as the Phils commit four errors. Leftfielder Jim Perkins becomes the first Reading Phillie to homer, smashing a 400- foot solo shot to right-center that ties the game at 3-3 in the 5th.
April 22, 2007: At Reading, 9,880 fans jam FirstEnergy Stadium on a beautiful Sunday afternoon to set a new single-game attendance record. The home team is never in the game, though, as Akron plates 13 runs over the first four innings on the way to a 14-3 win.
April 22, 2013: At Harrisburg, Jesse Biddle sets what is believed to be a franchise record for strikeouts in a game by fanning 16 Harrisburg Senators in a 3-2 victory. Biddle allows just one hit and walks two in 7.0 shutout innings for his second win as a Fightin Phil. He takes a perfect game into the 7th inning and strikes out the side in four of his seven innings of work. He also contributes to the victory with his bat, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored.
April 22, 2025: At Portland, the Fightin Phils lost a heartbreaker, 9-8, to the Sea Dogs. Reading entered the eighth inning up 8-4, but five-unearned runs cost the R-Phils in the loss. Aidan Miller matches a season-high with three hits in the loss, and scored three runs. Jean Cabrera started and goes a season-high six innings.
April 23, 1952: At Reading, the Indians christen Municipal Stadium with a 5-4 victory over the Scranton Miners before 4,220 fans. Howard Rodemoyer picks up the win in relief. The game is played despite a consistent drizzle throughout.
April 23, 1953 – At Williamsport, Murph Murszewski fires a 3-hit shutout and strikes out nine in leading Reading to a 6-0 win.
April 23, 1955: At Reading, Don Minnick wins his first of 20 games that season, garnering the decision in a 7-5 win over Elmira. Third baseman Paul “Cooter” Jones walks three times, steals a base and scores three runs for the Indians.
April 23, 1967: At York, the R-Phils improve to 2-0 by winning their first road game, 6-5, behind a complete game by future Philadelphia manager Dallas Green. Green, who is also Reading’s pitching coach, allows two unearned runs in the bottom of the 9th but gets Bill Vickery to pop out with the tying run on third to end it.
April 23, 1998: At Reading, the Phillies score seven runs in the 7th Inning to complete a comeback from an 11-3 deficit, beating Portland 12-11. Steve Carver (3-for-5, double, 4 RBI) and Reggie Taylor (3-for-4, double, 2 SBs, 3 runs) lead the R-Phils’ offensive effort.
April 23, 2009: At Reading, Michael Taylor’s second home run of the game, a solo shot to lead off the 11th, gives the R-Phils a 7-6 win over Bowie. Taylor, who had not homered in the R-Phils’ first 11 games, finishes 4-for-6 with 3 RBI and 3 run scored.
April 23, 2013: At Harrisburg, Zach Collier’s 3-run homer in the top of the 9th rallies Reading past the Senators for a 7-5 win at MetroBank Park. Albert Cartwright extends his hitting streak to 12 straight games with a single during the winning rally.
April 23, 2016: At Reading, the Fightin Phils score 2 runs on an error in the 9th inning to tie the game at 3, then beat New Hampshire, 4-3, when Rhys Hoskins leads off the bottom of the 11th with a homer.
April 23, 2019: At Richmond, the Fightin Phils top the Flying Squirrels 5-2 thanks to a pair of runs in the sixth and ninth innings. David Parkinson allowed two runs over 5.2 innings to pick up his second win of the season. Ali Castillo had three hits and drove in two runs, while Darick Hall had two base knocks, including a double and a run scored.
April 24, 1908: Frank “Home Run” Baker plays his first game in Reading, collecting a pair of RBI singles in a 9-5 loss to Lancaster at the North 11th Street Grounds.
April 24, 1953 – At Reading, the Indians take their home opener by clobbering Williamsport, 12-2, before 4,442 at Municipal Stadium. Dom Della Rocca leads the attack by going 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
April 24, 1963: At Reading, the Red Sox bunch all four hits and four runs in the first inning to defeat Charleston, 4-2, in their home opener. The game takes only 1:58 as the Sox manage only one base runner after the first inning.
April 24, 1994: At Reading, the Phillies commit six errors in a 14-3 drubbing at the hands of Trenton.
April 24, 2003: At Reading, Marlon Byrd, on rehab assignment from Philadelphia, hits a solo home run in the bottom of the 14th to beat Harrisburg, 9-8. Byrd was 2-for-8 in the game.
April 24, 2004: At Trenton, Scott Youngbauer hits a solo home run in the top of the 7th inning to win the second game of a double-header vs. the Thunder, 6-5. Youngbauer goes 2-for-3 with 2 runs, 3 RBI, a double and a homer.
April 24, 2006: At Connecticut, Scott Mathieson strikes out 11 and gives up just five hits and one run over 7.0 innings for his first victory as an R-Phil. Jim Rushford (3-for-4) and Michael Bourn (2-for-4) each score a pair of runs in the 6-1 win.
April 24, 2012: At Reading, Darin Ruf’s first home run at America’s Classic Ballpark, a solo blast in the 1st inning, kick starts a 6-0 Phillies whitewashing of Richmond. Tyler Cloyd picks up his 3rd and final win of the season for Reading, striking out five and allowing just five hits over 7.0 innings. Cloyd would go on to win the ERA title (2.35) for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, end the season in Philadelphia and win 17 games between AA, AAA and the Majors.
April 24, 2013: At Harrisburg, Albert Cartwright’s hitting streak reaches 13 consecutive games as he goes 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. The Phils’ 6-5 victory completes a 3-game sweep on City Island.
April 24, 2015: At Harrisburg, Art Charles goes 4-for-4 with 2 triples, 2 doubles, a walk, 5 RBI and a run scored in Reading’s 7-4 win over the Senators. The triples would be the only ones he hit in 289 at-bats that season. Cameron Perkins is 2-for-5 with a double, 3 runs and an RBI.
April 24, 2017: At Harrsiburg, Andrew Pullin goes 3-for-5 with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs as Reading pounds the Senators, 9-1. It is Pullin’s third straight 3-hit game.
April 24, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils beat Somerset 4-3 in a game where the teams combined to leave 24 men on base and hit 1-21 with runners in scoring position. Gabriel Rincones Jr. hits a home run to right field that eventually lands on the other side of Route 61, for his fourth homer of the season.
April 24, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils beat Somerset 10-4. Carson Taylor had two hits and two RBI, while Marcus Lee Sang added two hits and drove in four runs. Andrew Baker earned the win, marking his first victory since the 2022 season. The 10 runs were a season-high for Reading, and five scored in the eighth was also a season best. Additionally, the Fightin Phils were 5-13 with RISP in the win. The lineup batted around in the eighth, marking the first instance this season after doing it six times last season (Last: 8/1/23 at HFD).
April 24, 2025: At Portland, Chuck King tossed the best game of his career in just his third career start. King went a career-high five innings and allowed just one hit and two base runners. King left the game with Reading up 3-0, but the R-Phils ultimately fell 4-3.
April 25, 1908: At the North 11th Street Grounds in Reading, Frank “Home Run” Baker collects three hits and scores the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning as Reading tops Lancaster, 6-5. Lancaster had rallied to tie the game with three runs in the 9th thanks to three errors by the Reading shortstop, Owens.
April 25, 1967: At Williamsport, 40-year old Robin Roberts starts his comeback attempt with the Reading Phillies with a 1-0 loss to the Mets. Roberts allows eight singles, four of them infield hits, and strikes out nine, claiming after the game, “I was satisfied.” The Phillies leave 11 men on base in absorbing their first loss.
April 25, 1972: At Reading’s Municipal Stadium, the Phillies defeat Quebec City, 3-2, despite being held to just one hit, a Nellie Garcia RBI triple.
April 25, 1996: At Reading, Bobby Estallela hits two home runs and drives in five in the Phils’ 13-3 win over Hardware City.
April 25, 1999: At Reading, the Phils score eight in the 6th to beat Erie, 10-7.
April 25, 2010: At Reading, Phillippe Aumont and two relievers combine to beat Richmond, 2-0, on a 1-hitter. Aumont does not allow a hit over 6.0 innings while walking two and striking out six. The Flying Squirrels only hit is Conor Gillaspie’s two-out single off Chance Chapman in the 7th.
April 25, 2012: At Reading, Trevor May, J.C. Ramirez and Tyson Brummett combine on a 1-hitter as the Phillies shut out Richmond, 1-0. May strikes out 7 in 6.0 innings to improve to 4-0. Tug Hulett’s sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning brings home Steve Susdorf with the game’s only tally.
April 25, 2016: At Reading, Logan Moore throws out all 3 runners who attempt to steal a base in a 7-4 win over Akron. Jake Fox is the offensive star, going 3-for-3 with a HR and 3 RBIs.
April 25, 2019: At Reading, the Fightin Phils pick up their fourth-straight win with an 8-1 triumph over New Hampshire. Three Reading pitchers combined to hold the Fisher Cats to just one hit and one run. Luke Williams, Ali Castillo, and Darick Hall all had two hits. Hall added his third home run of the season and drove in a season-high five runs.
April 25, 2023: At Reading, the Fightin Phils explode for 11 runs in an early-morning 11-5 win over the Altoona Curve. Reading hits three home runs, including a grand slam into the pool from Cam Cannon. Ethan Lindow was excellent on the mound, tossing six innings and getting the win.
April 25, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils win their fourth-straight game, a 5-0 shutout over the Somerset Patriots. Robinson Pina led the way with six-innings, allowing just five hits and striking out five hitters. Caleb Ricketts had three hits, including two doubles, while Baron Radcliff homered, had three hits and was a triple shy of the cycle.
April 25, 2025: At Portland, Gabe Mosser goes a season-high six innings and strikes out 10 batters, which is the most hitters struck out by a Reading pitcher so far that season. Reading ultimately falls 2-1 to the Sea Dogs as Gunner Mayer allowed a walk-off home run to Tyler Miller in the bottom of the ninth inning.
April 26, 1953 – At Reading, the Indians sweep a twin bill from Binghamton, 6-4 and 4-3, to run their record to 6-0. In the second contest Reading scores two in the bottom of the 7th to pull out a last at bat victory. Billy Harrell’s third hit of the game, a double, drives home the game-winning tally.

April 26, 1997: At Reading, the Phillies trail 10-0 and don’t have a hit going into the bottom of the 5th inning, but rally to stun Norwich, 11-10. Matt Guiliano (who hadn’t homered in his previous 250 Double-A at-bats) and Steve Carver each hit grand slams, with Carver’s tying the game in the 9th. Marlon Anderson caps the five-run 9th with the game-winning RBI single.
April 26, 2008: At Reading, Josh Outman strikes out nine in 5.0 innings (4 H, 2 ER) and helps his own cause by hitting a 3-run homer and scoring twice as the R-Phils beat Connecticut, 9-2.
April 26, 2017: At Harrisburg, Tom Eshelman picks up the win and helps himself with a 3-run home run in the 5th inning as the Fightin Phils beat the Senators, 4-2. Eshelman pitches 6.0 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 6 for his second win of the season. His homer was the first for a Reading pitcher since Vance Worley’s on July 9, 2010.
April 27, 1955: At Wilkes-Barre, Clell Hobson’s RBI single with two out in the 9th inning lifts Reading to a 1-0 victory over the Barons in front of just 304 fans. Don Nance tosses a complete-game four-hitter to earn the win.
April 27, 1972: At Reading, after two straight improbable victories, the R-Phils give one back to Quebec City, committing ten errors and allowing seven unearned runs in a 7-2 loss. Reading leads 2-1 going into the ninth, but surrenders six runs in the frame thanks to four miscues. Shortstop Tom Bozich leads the comedy show by booting four balls. The team error total after just five games stands at 21.
April 27, 1993: At Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, Jeff Jackson drives home the winning run in the 13th inning as Reading beats Bowie, 4-3.
April 27, 1995: At Canton-Akron, Jason Moler leads Reading past the Indians, 10-4, by going 4-for-5 with 3 RBI. Reading scored five in the 3rd to take a 9-0 lead.
April 27, 2004: At Reading, Gavin Floyd pitches 5.1 shutout innings and extends his season-opening scoreless streak to 17 straight innings, leading the Phils past Portland, 3-1, in game one of a twin bill. Miguel Quintana knocks in all three Reading runs with a pair of singles. Floyd’s streak would end at 18 in the second inning of his next start on May 4 at Norwich.
April 27, 2010: At Reading, pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg dominates for 5.0 innings as Harrisburg beats the R-Phils, 1-0, in game one of a double-header. Michael Spidale is the only Phillie to reach off Strasburg, gaining first on a strikeout passed ball. Strasburg strikes out six and also knocks in the game’s lone run with a 2-out single in the 5th. In the nightcap, things get worse for Reading as Chris Marrero’s grand slam in the 7th rallies the Senators to a 7-6 win.
April 27, 2011: At Erie, Steve Susdorf has a field day at the expense of the Erie pitching staff, going 5-for-5 with two homers, a double, three runs scored and eight RBIs as Reading wins, 14-6. The eight RBIs tie a franchise record set by Steve Carver in 1998. Tuffy Gosewisch has a pretty good day himself, also hitting two HRs while driving in five and scoring twice.
April 27, 2013: At Reading, Troy Hanzawa clouts his first Double-A home run in 477 plate appearances but the Fightin Phils fall to New Hampshire, 7-3. It would be his only homer in a Reading uniform (692 plate appearances) and the final HR of his professional career.
April 27, 2016: At Reading, Akron starter Dace Kime lasts just 5 batters, walking the first 3 and then plunking the next 2 in absorbing his 3rd loss of the season. He throws 20 pitches, 17 for balls, and sees his ERA rise to 11.32 as 4 of the 5 runners score. Reading beats the RubberDucks, 11-2, as Dylan Cozens goes 2-for-2 with a homer, double, 3 RBIs, 2 runs and 3 walks.
April 27-29, 2018: At Portland, the Fightin Phils’ entire 3-game series against the Sea Dogs is postponed due to rain and poor field drainage. One of the games would be made up as part of a doubleheader in Reading on May 15.
April 27, 2023: At Reading, Altoona and the Fightin Phils remain scoreless into the eighth inning when a Wendell Rijo single puts the R-Phils up 1-0. But, in the ninth, Max Kuhns was unable to collect the save as Altoona plated three runs in the inning. Reading scored one in the bottom of the ninth, but ultimately fell to the Curve 3-2.
April 27, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils are held to just two hits as they fall to the Somerset Patriots 9-0. Somerset has three triples on the night, and there is no prior record of a team doing that against Reading previously.
April 28, 1953 – At Reading, the Indians reach 7-0 with a 3-0 blanking of Binghamton in game one of a double header. Buddy Leo Daley tosses a 4-hitter to get the win. The Triplets hand Reading its first loss of the year in game two by a score of 6-4.
April 28, 1995: At Reading, Rob Grable homers twice and Mike Grace pitches 8 strong innings in a 10-2 win over Hardware City.
April 28, 1998: At Norwich, Randy Wolf strikes out 13 in eight scoreless innings as the Phillies top Norwich, 3-1.
April 28, 2006: At Reading, Brian Mazone (7.0 IP), Luke Lockwood and Adam Shafer combine on a 5-hit shutout of Harrisburg as the Phillies win, 2-0. Both Reading runs come in the 6th inning.
April 28, 2009: At Reading, Joe Savery gives up six hits and a run over 6.0 innings to pick up his first Double-A win as the R-Phils beat Altoona, 3-1. Savery’s next 14 starts would produce 11 more victories and three no-decisions. His next loss would not come until July 18.
April 28, 2013: At Reading, the Fightin Phils and New Hampshire do battle for 11 scoreless innings before the Fisher Cats break the tie in the top of the 12th. Reading rallies in the bottom half, however, to win the game, 2-1, thanks to a single, three walks and a hit batter. Sebastian Valle’s bases loaded walk ties the game and Tommy Hottovy plunks Miguel Abreu to bring the winning run home. Jesse Biddle gets a no-decision despite striking out 10 and allowing just one hit over 6.0 scoreless innings.
April 28, 2017: At Reading, the Fightin Phils pick up a 10-7 win over Portland. Though it is just the 17th game of the season, Scott Kingery sets a career high with his 6th home run, a 2-run shot in the 2nd inning.
April 28, 2019: At Reading, the Fightin Phils beat New Hampshire 2-1 in 11 innings, despite being outhit 9-3 in the game. Mickey Moniak had one of the three hits for the R-Phils, his first triple of the season. Reading’s bullpen combined to allow two hits and no runs over the game’s final six innings.
April 28, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils snap a two-game losing streak and beat Somerset 6-3. With the win, the R-Phils pick up their first series win of the season and move to one game under .500. Jim Haley homered, while Tristan Garnett, Max Lazar and Tommy McCollum combined to shut out the Patriots in the game’s final three innings. It was also McCollum’s third-straight appearance with a save.
April 29, 1955: At Williamsport, Don Minnick blanks the Grays, 4-0, on a four-hitter for his second win of the season. Center fielder Jack Waters hits a home run on the game’s first pitch and first baseman Chuck Weiss clouts two homers to drive in the remainder of the Indians’ runs.
April 29, 2001: At Harrisburg, Reading’s Adam Walker hurls six shutout innings of one-hit ball to defeat Harrisburg, 4-2. Kutztown product Ron Chiavacci takes the loss.
April 29, 2009: At Reading, Vance Worley, Josh Shortslef and Sergio Escalona combine to shut out visiting Altoona, 2-0. Worley goes 7.0 innings for his second win, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out seven.
April 29, 2011: At Reading, Josh Zeid (5.0 IP), Mike Cisco (3.0 IP) and Phillippe Aumont combine to blank Portland, 2-0, as the R-Phils record their second straight shutout. Zeid does not allow a hit, walking three and fanning two.
April 29, 2017: At Reading, the Fightin Phils take advantage of a tough twilight sky to beat Portland, 6-5, for their 6th straight win. With one out and the game tied 5-5 in the 7th inning, Scott Kingery’s routine pop to center falls for a double when center fielder Joseph Monge can’t see the ball. The next batter, Andrew Pullin, doubles Kingery home with a pop to shallow right center that nobody on the right side of the field locates until it has landed.
April 29, 2023: At Reading, the Fightin Phils and Altoona Curve split a doubleheader. Altoona won the first game 4-3, but Reading responded with a 3-1 win in game two. Phillies number-two prospect Mick Abel was brilliant, throwing six innings and giving up just one run on two hits. Abel also registered six strikeouts in the win.
April 29, 2025: At Reading, the Fightin Phils fall to Harrisburg 9-7 for their ninth-straight loss. It marks the Fightin Phils longest losing streak since losing eight in a row from July 22-30, of the 2022 season.
April 30, 1919: Reading plays its inaugural game in the International League at Lauer’s Park. The Coal Barons defeat Binghamton, 6-2, in front of a standing room crowd which “numbered in the neighborhood of 5,000; It filled the grandstand to capacity , the bleachers to overflowing and hemmed in the playing field with a solid wall of humanity on every side”.
April 30, 1941: At Allentown, the Reading Brooks open the Inter-State League season by scoring eight runs in the first two innings of a 10-2 triumph over the Wings. Bill Moore goes 5-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI, while Carl Furillo is 3-for-5 with a homer, double, three runs and three RBIs.
April 30, 1955: At Williamsport, Reading first baseman Chuck Weiss clouts two home runs in a 7-6 loss to the Grays, giving him five long balls in three games. Weiss’ good fortune was short-lived, as he was released just nine days later following a 1-for-24 slump. Other than his five homers, Weiss managed only a single and double in 44 at-bats.
April 30, 1967: At Elmira, Dallas Green tosses a six-hit shutout, walking one and striking out five en route to his second victory as Reading wins, 7-0. Green also drives in a run and scores in a decisive five-run 4th.
April 30, 1994: At Wilmington, Delaware, the Phillies are held to a combined one run and seven hits in a double header loss to Bowie. Game one was 7-1 and game two was 1-0.
April 30, 2000: At Harrisburg, Andy Dominqiue’s two homers and 5 RBI aren’t enough as the Senators beat the Phillies, 8-5.
April 30, 2011: At Reading, J.C. Ramirez completes a phenomenal opening month by picking up the win in the R-Phils’ 5-2 sacking of Portland. Ramirez goes 6.0 innings, allowing just one unearned run on six hits while striking out one in improving to 4-0 and lowering his ERA to 1.03. Ramirez was later named the Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Month.
April 30, 2012: At Manchester, winning pitcher Trevor May wraps up EL Player of the Month honors by allowing 2 runs on 9 hits while striking out 7 in a 3-2 victory over New Hampshire. May wins all of his April starts (5-0) while posting a 2.40 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 30 innings. Tug Hulett, 0-for-24 entering the game, avoids a hitless opening month by going 1-for-3 and scoring the go-ahead run in the 7th inning.
April 30, 2023: At Reading, the Fightin Phils and Curve get rained out for the second time in three days. This time, the game will not be made up.
April 30, 2024: At Portland, the Fightin Phils fall 9-3 to the Sea Dogs in a sloppy game. Reading commits a season-high six errors, including three from shortstop Robert Moore. The six errors are the most in a game for the R-Phils since also committing six on July 9, 2016 against Bowie. Marcus Lee Sang went 3-4, with two runs, a double, two home runs and three RBI. It was the third multi-homer and third game in his career with three extra-base hits. Reading outhit Portland 9-6 in the loss, but Reading pitching issued 11 walks, in addition to the six errors.
April 30, 2025: At Reading, the Fightin Phils fall 6-3 to Harrisburg, allowing six-unanswered runs in the game’s final three innings. It marked the R-Phils 10th-straight loss, marking the first time Reading has lost 10-or-more games in a row since June 17-29, 2014, when Reading lost 12 in a row.
